How does eharmony work?

EHarmony is very committed to their matching system. The site takes the approach that it would be better to give its members no matches than to give them bad matches. EHarmony will even reject applicants that they feel they can’t provide adequate matches to. In some ways, it’s good to see eHarmony being so honest but it does cause problems. I guess this is how they do it at eHarmony, no winks, no looking at each others profiles, no contact except through their matchmaking service. A few days later, my friend got an email saying that there were NO MATCHES for him. As in, no one in America was remotely compatible with him.

In a nutshell, you pay your money, find a profile that catches your eye, communicate with him/her, go on a date, get engaged, get lots of gifts, and you get married.

Who cares about the rest, right?

Well, technically, you’ve got to understand how the online dating process works first. And, since this post is about how eharmony works, in particular, we’ll start there. Shall we?

How does eharmony matching work?

When it comes to online dating, there are usually two ways to view other profiles:

Either the site allows you full access to their entire database or they parse profiles out to you daily based upon your settings and preferences. Match.com and Christian Mingle do the former; eharmony does the latter.

Some people don’t like eharmony for that very reason. They don’t like having someone else (a computer algorithm) decide if another profile is a suitable match for them. They don’t like waiting for new profiles, and they certainly don’t like days when no profiles arrive in their inbox. In a word, they don’t like it when they’re not in control. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a matter of preference and we’re all different.

But here’s the thing: When we objectively compared all of the Best Online Dating Sites, we found that there really is something to that 29-dimension personality test that they so highly tout, especially when you combine it with strict settings on religion. When compared with some other sites, the quality of like-minded Christian profiles that were given via eharmony was higher. That doesn’t mean the site is perfect–far from it. However, it is a little easier to find Christian profiles on eharmony than it is on the other sites.

That doesn’t mean you’re destined to find the love of your life, mind you. It just means that through eharmony, you might find similiar Christians slightly easier than you might on other sites.

How does the eharmony process work?

The process begins with you taking their lengthy personality assessment. You’ll want to set aside a good 20-30 minutes to complete it.

From there, you set up a profile. Make sure your profile is an accurate display of who you are. Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. If you’re funny, don’t try too hard. If you’re not athletic, don’t include photos of you holding a tennis racket. Just be honest—with your words and your photos.

When you start receiving matches, you’ll have the option to begin communication with them or close them. If you close them, they’ll be removed from your view. If you want to start communicating with them, you’ll have 2 options: Use their guided communication system (choose from their questions) or go straight to open communication (emails through the site). How you proceed is up to you and your comfort level. If you’re new to online dating and it makes you nervous, you might find the guided communication to be helpful. But if you’re a maverick of sorts, you can get straight to the heart of the matter and start talking.
